Dachshund Nola Reviews: Ruffwear Load Up Car Harness

Helllooo, everyone! I am thrilled to be working with Ruffwear for a review of their brand new dynamically tested Load Up Car Harness!
If you've been following us for a while, you know I am a huge fan of Ruffwear and have done several reviews for them. They're a top notch company offering a wide array of durable and functional products for dogs, including coats, leashes, harnesses, backpacks, and lifejackets.

The Load Up Harness comes in four sizes (from a 13" girth all the way up to 42!), is hand washable, extremely sturdy, and very comfortable for the dog. Here is some info on the Load Up Harness, and then I'll get right into the review.

The Ruffwear Load Up™ harness is an automotive canine travel harness designed to safely transport dogs to and from adventures. Built with strength-rated hardware and components, the Load Up harness has been successfully tested to withstand the rigors of a vehicle crash test. Attaches to existing seatbelts for a universal fit. Keeps dogs secure during sudden vehicle movements and allows drivers to focus. Easy to put on and adjust, comfortable for dogs to wear during extended travel, and can be left on dogs for bathroom breaks and during rest stops.

I can't even count the number of car harnesses I've tried for my dogs, and up until now I was unsatisfied with every single one. They were either too flimsy, too easy to escape, or didn't come small enough for my dogs. It was frustrating, to say the least. Luckily for us though, Ruffwear has put an end to that headache!

First of all, the fit is amazing. While it can be tough to adjust, it's perfectly customizable for your dog's unique shape, and once you've sized it correctly it stays put. It's adjustable at the neck and the chest, and the excess chest strap is easily tucked up flat with the convenient velcro strips.

The neck comes to a very slight V, so there's no uncomfortable pressure on the neck. That area is extremely well padded, and the straps go over the material so they don't touch the pup's skin. It has reflective piping  on the front of the chest, top of the neck and the belly that is extremely bright.

I can't get over how well this thing is made! You really need to put your hands on it to get the full effect, but hopefully you can tell from these photos. The girth buckles are metal and securely slip into place. Despite the look, it's extremely easy to put on and buckles right into your car.

The attachment loop is well attached and the perfect length. Nola could sit, stand and lay down with it buckled in, but couldn't get to me or onto the floor. She was very comfortable in it and it didn't interfere with how she wished to move or lay.
She wasn't thrilled that this car visit was just for photos.
The harness is intended for use in the back seat, but mine is full.

As you can see, she's trying to find food on the floor and the harness is keeping her quite secure. ;)

My only minor complaint is I wish there was a D ring on the back to connect the leash to. I use thin leashes since my dogs are small, and the clips of most of them are too small to easily clip on to the attachment loop.

I strongly recommend loosening the straps completely, buckling it onto your dog and then tightening it down. Trust me,  much easier to tug down that way.

Other than that, I am extremely pleased with the Load Up Car Harness and highly recommend it. 5/5 stars!

  1. That looks the pawfect thingy for me for my puppy adventures this summer. Getting a harness that works for small pups is, as you say, very difficult!

  5. I loves my Ruffwear harness!!! Ma uses a carabiner to attach the leash to the strap of the harness. Works well. I am not disappointed at all with them!
