Dachshund Health Problems

Here are some of the most common health problems in the Doxie breed. Although we are usually very healthy and long lived, we do have some problems. The good news is most of these problems are preventable.

Back problems. This is a huge problem in Dachshunds. The probability of back problems greatly increases if we are fat, allowed to jump, live in houses/apartments with lots of stairs, are held wrong or are dropped.
One of the best things you can do for your Doxie is to get them stairs or ramps to get on beds and couches, and not let us be picked up by strangers or small children (as I said before).

Epilepsy. This is usually genetic. Almost always well controlled with medication.

Obesity. Unless it's caused by a Thyroid problem, this is entirely the owner's fault.

Diabetes.

All of these are seen in all our colors and patterns. Double Dapples are often blind and deaf. Isabellas have more skin and allergy problems.

So for I am extremely healthy and the vet says I'm in perfect condition. Mom's done great. Because I deserve it!!!!!
